Superhero Classroom

This year I decided to go with a superhero theme in the Unit. I love collecting comic books and watching super hero movies so this was something I was very passionate about. For my front door,I cut out letters to say “Having a Super time in Mr. Bemiss’s class”. I also lamented comic book covers and placed it on the door. I also hung up some comic books and some stuffed toys.
I created comic book banners out of comic books. I cut a comic book page into a triangle. Next I would staple it on a ribbon. I used about eight feet of ribbon. I also created a foam Captain American shield to get students to talk in the classroom. I ask a question and I toss the shield to them.
I also created a super hero job chart. I took a foam board and glued small square pieces of comic books to make a pocket. I printed out paper dolls to put the students’ name on it. I also created a Spider Man word web. We will use the web during word study to talk about synonyms. I also created a Hulk voice meter to remind the children what voice level they need to be at.
Finally, we have a Batcave for a meeting area. My dad got this from Pepsi. They used this for their Mountain Dew promotion. I just spray painted the Mountain Dew logo with chalkboard paint and hung up some bats. The super hero classroom will be a great way to introduce ELLs to American culture. Feel free to steal any of my ideas.
